Garden Bird Baths
One of the easiest ways to attract birds to your garden is with a bird bath. Not only will you attract many birds but you will also attract a wide variety of species that you might not otherwise see in your backyard.
Bird baths can actually get you more species of birds than a bird feeder because the feeder only attracts the types of birds that like the food you put in it. All birds love water so a bird bath with attract a greater variety of species.
You can buy bird baths in a variety of styles and made from a wide range of materials. Bird baths can be as expensive as you want, but if you are on a budget you can make your own out of simple supplies you can find at home or at the local gardening center.
One thing that is imperative with a bird bath, whether you buy one or make it yourself is that it has clean water. Because of this, you will need to make sure you buy the appropriate supplies to clean it properly as well as be sure you can set aside a little bit of time every so often for this task. Clean water is critical to keep those birds coming as well as for their good health. In the heat of summer, plan to change the water every day and at least every few days during cooler times.
Another thing to think about is the depth of the bird bath. You don’t want it to be too deep – no more than 3”. If you buy one and it is deeper, you can make it more shallow by putting some small stones in the basin.
Also, be sure your bird bath has a non slip bottom – you don’t want your birds to loose their footing! You want the bath to be comfortable for them to stand on so that they keep coming back. Cement or concrete makes a perfect surface for this.
If you really want to make your backyard birds happy, think about installing a bird bath fountain or dripper. Birds really love the sound of dripping water and it’s so much fun to watch them play in it.
You can buy bird baths on a pedestal that sit in a focal point on your garden, or hang them from a tree or even hang them from brackets from your porch railing but one thing you want to make sure of is that you put it in a place that will make your birds feel safe from predators as the safer they feel, the more likely the are to use it.
If you love to watch birds flit around your yard then a bird bath is perfect as it will be providing the birds with fresh water that they need for survival and they will provide you with a season of enjoyment.
When setup and cared for properly, a bird bath is something that both birds and people can enjoy!
